I read in The Star today that Barack Obama has links to Malaysia. Nothing wrong with that, of course. I just don’t understand our fixation on finding the “missing” Malaysian link in people, especially famous people. It seems that every time someone made the news, our papers are quick to search for that person’s Malaysian root. The previous time it was Gwen Stefani’s connection to Malaysia through her husband’s stepmother. Then it was Sufiah Yusof whose mother happened to be Malaysian and now it’s Barack Obama. It must be because we’ve run out of really important (and more seriously, intelligent) people in our country that we’re so intent on looking for that elusive link, doesn't matter who they are. Or are we just hoping that their fame will rub off on us so we can have our 30 seconds worth of it? Have we no better news to report?
